Calls for Application: 8th Lola Kenya Screen Golden Mboni and 14-Plus Award


Lola Kenya Screen, the Nairobi-based charity specialising in issues related to children, youth, mass media, culture and development, has opened her call for film submission and skill-development participation for the 8th annual Lola Kenya Screen audiovisual media festival, skill-development programme and market for children and youth that takes place in Nairobi, Kenya, August 12-17, 2013.

Lola Kenya Screen is also calling upon children and youth interested in developing their creative and cultural entrepreneurship skills and showcasing their films at Africa’s first audiovisual media event EXCLUSIVELY designed for children and youth to send in their applications between December 1, 2012 and April 15, 2013.

I Will Be At Celtic, Wanyama Rules Out Manchester United Move




According to reports by The DailyMail,  the Manchester United target is set to finish his season in Scottish side Celtic but has revealed he could leave in the summer.

The 21-year-old's impressive form has significantly contributed to Celtic's run to the Champions League knockout stages and attracted the attention of United's Sir Alex Ferguson. Any moves to sign him before the January transfer deadline closes, however, are highly unlikely to succeed.

Churchill Show Live Recording at Carnivore

Award-winning Kenyan TV show Churchill Live is back, and the first show of the season will have its live recording on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Carnivore Restaurant.

As usual, Classic 105's Daniel 'Churchill' Ndambuki will host the show that has helped launch the careers of many comedians including that of Eric Omondi, MC Jesee, Ayeiya -poa poa and JB Masanduku.

Nairobi to Host International Junior Karate Championship



Kenya will host the International Junior Karate Championship in May 2013 at the Utalii College, Nairobi. According to the Kenya Karate Federation (KKF),  the international tournament will be held in line with the World Authority Traditional Karate Do Association (WATKDA) rules.

Five countries have so far confirmed participation in the tourney including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa and Malawi.

Mandate of the People by the Late Ogola Launched



Monday witnessed the posthumous launch of Mandate of the People, a book written by the late Dr. Margaret Ogola. The launch which took place at the Nairobi Intercontinental Hotel was graced by chairperson of the Commission on the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC), Mr. Charles Nyachae.

The book which was unveiled by Focus Publishers explores the encounters of a typical Kenyan politician, who will do anything to achieve what they want; and urges the Kenyan middle-class and business class  to be proactive in politics.

7 Nominations for Kenya at Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards

Kenya has 7 nominees in the inaugural Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCAs) set for Lagos, Nigeria from March 8th to 9th.

Nigeria and South Africa lead the pack with majority of the slots, while Kenya is represented with KTN TV drama series Lies that Bind, The XYZ Show, Makutano Junction and Thesis Film Yellow Fever.

2012 KCPE Results are Out


The results of the 2012 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations were released on Monday morning by Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo, seeing three pupils announced top with 430 marks  each

The three were Kinoti Joy Kathure from Meru County, Mwaura Boniface and Wachira Njomo, both from Kiambu with 430 marks out of a possible 500. 

According to the minister, the results were far much better than those of 2011 and 2010, where a total of 416,900 candidates scored above 250 marks representing 51.35 percent of the candidates who sat for the 2012 examinations.

Kenya’s Amazon.com, Jumia.co.ke to be Launched by Clone Masters



Berlin-based Rocket Internet is set to launch an e-commerce shopping solution in Kenya dubbed Jumia. According to its pre-launch website, the online retail portal will offer a platform to purchase electronics, books, DVDs among other items and have them shipped directly to their premises.

Launched by the Samwer Brothers in 2007, Rocket Internet boasts of over  50 companies in over  40 countries including Groupon and Zalando in France, HelloFood in Kenya, Ghana and Senegal, Kaymu and Azmalo in Nigeria and Pakistan, Wimdu and Glossybox in South Africa as well as Jumia in Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco.

Mombasa to Host CAR Sevens in April

The coastal town of Mombasa will play host to the prestigious Confederation of African (CAR) Sevens rugby tournament in April, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced.

Speaking to the press KRU's ag. chief executive officer, Jack Okoth said Kenya will not be represented by the main rugby sevens team but by second tier, Shujaa in the two-day event . While the other Kenyan sides will be drawn from Nairobi, Nyanza, Rift-Valley, Western, Nyanza and the Coast.

Teams that have up to now confirmed participation include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda and Namibia.

2012 KCPE Results to be released Tomorrow



Monday, January 28, 2013 is the day of reckoning for nearly 800,000 candidates who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo is expected to officiate the release at the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC)'s headquarters Mitihani House, Nairobi.

2013 Kenya Presidential Debate Slated for February 11th



Six presidential candidates will face off in a live televised debate on Monday February 11, 2013 at the Brookhouse International School.

The six include Raila Odinga (Coalition for Reforms and Democracy), Uhuru Kenyatta (Jubilee),  Musalia Mudavadi (Amani), Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), and James Ole Kiyiapi (Restore and Build Kenya) and Peter Kenneth (Eagle).

Kenya 7's Squad for Wellington and Las Vegas legs Announced

The Kenya Sevens lineup that will compete in the Wellington and Las Vegas legs of the 2012/2013 HSBC Sevens World Series is out.

Andrew Amonde will captain the team, that will see the return of Collins Injera, Oscar Ouma and Biko Adema after missing out on the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens due to academic and job related commitments.

Kenya  is in Pool B alongside France, Argentina and Tonga for the Wellington Sevens.

Ngugi Among National Books Critics Awards Finalists

Kenya's prolific writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o was among 30 finalists announced on Monday for the 2012 National Book Critics Circle’s (NBCC) Awards.

The UC Irvine professor was nominated for his recent autobiography 'In the House of the Interpreter' published by  Pantheon. The book is a follow-up to his first memoir, 'Dreams in a Time of War' introducing the reader to the creation of modern Africa from the collision of a series of powerful opposing forces; nationalism and colonialism, rural tradition and capitalist modernity.

Kenya's Bishar Hussein Elected Universal Postal Director

Bishar Hussein who is a former ambassador to Abu Dhabi and Postmaster General of the Postal Corporation of Kenya has been elected new Director General of the Universal Postal Union, UN specialized body dealing with postal matters.

He officially took office on Monday promising to offer efficient management of the Union’s resources in the most transparent manner.

“We will explore every opportunity to raise sufficient funds to carry out the most important and critical programmes and projects that will further the cause of the Union,” Mr Hussein told Union members during his inauguration in Switzerland.

Kenya's 2012 Top 40 Under 40 Men

Nation Media Group's Business Daily presented the annual 'Top 40 Under 40' awards on December 4th 2012. The awards ceremony which seeks to recognise and celebrate young Kenyan's achievements in the field of business, enterprise and professionalism were graced by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

Speaking at the unveiling of the list, Dr. Mutunga urged professionals to uphold integrity in their undertakings. 
"For persons in business, the case of the Enron Corporation is too well known. What tends to be forgotten is that the main problem was not the profitability of the business as such, but the lack of integrity among the decision-makers within it. In other words, it was the failure and/or refusal by the professionals within the organisation to do what they should have been doing." - Dr. Mutunga

Google Unveils Kenya Elections Hub


Technology might not be a major issue in the country compared to other major challenges but Google use will help Kenyans track elections’ information through a hub. Google has employed the use of fusion tables among other Application Programming Interface (APIs) to ensure transparency and easy access of this information.

Speaking during the launch of the Kenya Elections Hub at the Sarova Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, Ory Okolloh, Google’s policy manager for Africa said that the organization’s role is to organize elections information and not to provide an opinion.

Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan’s book, ‘Interventions, A Life in War and Peace.’ was officially launched in a colorful ceremony held in Accra, Ghana on Saturday.

In the 353-page book, Annan provides a personal account of life in war-torn and peaceful countries as well as the achievements and challenges of the UN.

A good 2012 for Investors at the NSE


NSE was the second best performer in Africa and Middle East, after Egyptian Exchange (EGX) and eighth globally.

According to the annual market performance indices released by the Nairobi Securities Exchange, 2012 was definitely a good year for investors at the Nairobi-based bourse. Closing the year at Sh1.27 trillion, the bourse was also the second highest gainer among stock exchanges in Africa and the Middle East.     

An investor at the NSE closed the year 40 per cent richer according to the All-Share Index, a new indicator of the market performance while the benchmark NSE 20 share index that tracks blue chip firms rose by 28.95 per cent to close at 4,133.02 points.
